Well, I
made it to the end of my epic 3 week
racing stint with a win at the
inaugural Kansas 70.3. It was a
tough string of racing including a
mini-Kona training camp after the
Hawaii 70.3, but I made it out alive
with 2 wins and a top 5 placing at
Alcatraz.
The Kansas race was held in
Lawrence, near Kansas City, which is
actually a very cool town with a
beautiful lake and great roads for
riding. The course was very rolling
on the bike, with a gravel trail run
through the park. The weather was
hot and humid and made for a tough
day. I swam well and had a decent
ride, however I found myself 4:30
down off the bike. Not to be
deterred I dug in for a great run
and took the lead at 11 miles to win
the race. My 1:20 run split on a
hilly, trail course was pretty quick
but I didn't realize exactly how
fast it was until I looked at the
men's run times. The fastest man
was 1:16, with the rest of the men's
field running 1:18+ which makes for
one of the closest time
differentials in a 70.3. Look out
boys...
I am back in Colorado for a short
break before the next phase begins
-and then soon it will be time to
buckle down for some serious Kona
training.
